Scottish slinger Darren Beveridge became the first player to book his spot in the Series 15 Champions Week, claiming the Week One honours at the latest MODUS Super Series.
With a surname that some may argue resembles a pint of lager, it would be similar to calling an Italian bloke “Mr Pizza”, I guess.
However, Darren was Ice Cold personified as he whitewashed James Buckby to grab the trophy, prize and ensure a return to Portsmouth in a few months.
After the busy and gruelling group stages, six survived the chaos and made it to Saturday’s Finals Night. For the Scot, he did it relatively drama-free after finishing top of his Group A and putting his feet up on Thursday and Friday in preparation for the big finale.
That’s what happens when you start on a Monday and win your group. All the others have to return the next day. You can bugger off home like a kid who has deliberately forgotten his PE kit and is unwilling to wear any of the crap other children have once disregarded.
Whether Darren did that or not – I imagine not – he had valuable chill time to practise or get pissed. Or both.
Teamed with James Buckby and Kevin Cotiss, it was the two with B surnames who prevailed. Three games in, and with poor Kevin losing both, it was a pretty early exit unfortunately.
In the other mini-section, containing Jonny Barnes, Matt Clark and Richie Parkin, Superman advanced to face Beveridge. And Mr Parkin set up a showdown with Buckby.
No room at the inn sadly for Barnes, who must now go back to his ITV football punditry job and rely on guest spots doing his rap part during the song World In Motion.

Bucks and Bevs then both won their semis 4-2, which meant that, for the second time that evening, they would meet again in the showdown.
James won the earlier encounter, but this was the one that mattered.
And when the whistle went, Darren flew out of the blocks, didn’t look back and romped home to a emphatic 4-0 whitewash win.
Congrats to him.
He’s back around October-ish for Champs Week and a chance to win half a speedboat or an all-expenses-paid cruise around the Orkney Islands. Win win!
