Scotland’s Scott Robertson lived up to his favourite tag and claimed the last MODUS Super Series Champions Week slot.
Victory in the final over Alex Williams for Robbo was like finding the fifth and final golden ticket in a Wonka Bar and earning the right to take his grandpa to a chocolate factory run by an absolute nutcase.
Fortunately for the Aberdeenshire arrow-smith, the Live Lounge is run by people far less psychotic than Willy Wonka, although Owen Binks can be equally as bizarre. Especially if he’s on a film-making mission. Love ya really, lad!
OK, onto Saturday evening and Finals Night.
Scott The Scot – not his real middle name – was placed in a group with Jarred Cole and former PDC World Youth Champion Ted Evetts. He then proceeded to beat both and advance to the semis. Sadly for King of the Castle, he fell just short, losing both, which kind of worked out well because there was much hoovering to be done in the venue.
In the other mini-section, we had a bit of history. After Williams had whitewashed Kevin Burness, he went on to ping a nine-darter in victory over Andy Hamilton. It doesn’t automatically give you the two points or a cash bonus, but it does mean great exposure, with the video no doubt ending up going viral.
What is it about these firefighters and their talent on the oche? We have Soots performing on the main circuit and now this Welsh fella banging in perfect legs. At this rate, we’ll have to form an Emergency Services League. Perhaps make it two-tiered. Saying that, they already have that set up in the Police Force.
The Hammer overcame Northern Ireland’s Burness to reward himself with a semi-final against Robertson. But once again, the tartan thrower was on fire and Andy was unable to nail him down. See what I did there? Hammer… nail? Forget it.
In the other last-four clash, Williams smashed SuperTed, which sounds like something perhaps not fit for children’s television.
Fittingly, the two in the final deserved to be there on merit. Scott because he was supposed to be. And Williams purely for hitting the nine.
However, there can only be one winner – unless your name is Jack Tweddell, I guess – and it was Robertson who took the honours courtesy of a 4-2 triumph. That’s also a nice £5k cheque in his back pocket. And after buying Williams half a bitter as a consolation, being Scottish, he’ll more than likely stick the other £4,999 in a long-term savings plan.
That’s the dozen set in stone for Champions Week. Eleven top competitors and the cream of the amateur circuit, along with Neil Duff, will all vie for the grand prize of £25k and the distinction of being crowned MODUS Super Series 14 champion.
