Rising Polish hotshot Sebastian Bialecki claimed his second PDC Pro Tour title, defeating Mario Vandenbogaerde 8-6 in the final.
With Henry Coates grabbing the honours twenty-four hours earlier, it’s been a pretty good advert for the Development Tour system, with two of its brightest stars lifting the trophies in Germany.
There was also a spooky coincidence surrounding The Bolt’s triumph. Remember we said this accolade doubled his tally, giving him two Players Championship wins? Well, you’d be freaked out to learn he won the other one EXACTLY a year ago today. Even weirder, it was at the very same venue! I only wish I had appropriate music to accompany this bizarre coincidence.
Yes, a lot of the big guns were absent. And Damon Heta, who had a blinding couple of days, even had to borrow Chris Dobey’s trousers. There’s a far more logical explanation for that than anything you may currently be imagining.
Before we get to Seb, though, let’s take a minute to pay homage to the lamp-post-sized Belgian, Super Mario. It’s fair to say this year has, on the whole, been pretty crap on the tungsten scene for his compatriots. In fact, Belgium’s best player so far in 2026 is someone who can apparently do wheelies on the way to the oche – Vincent D’Hondt. But he doesn’t.
Mike De Decker often looks a shadow of the bloke who won the World Grand Prix less than two years ago. Kim, to be fair, is doing okay – that is, when he’s not trying to pick a fight with a stocky Hillbilly. And as for Dimi… well, he won’t want to buy the DVD of this season’s highlights in a hurry.
This was only Vandenbogaerde’s second-ever Players Championship final and, considering his best run on the floor this year before today was a last-16 appearance, he absolutely smashed his personal best. Hats off to a really good guy.
Back to Bialecki now, and he had to survive last-leg deciders in his opening two matches against Dennie Olde Kalter and Cor Dekker, who makes Super Mario look like… well, Sebastian Bialecki, I guess. That match probably looked like the Driscoll Brothers from Only Fools and Horses were having a game of darts.
After that, The Bolt won in lightning-quick fashion against Viktor Tingstrom, Bradley Brooks and, now back in his own clothes, Damon Heta, conceding just three legs across the three matches. Nice.
Against Gian van Veen in the semi-finals, it looked like the Dutchman was going to cruise to the line after opening up a 4-1 lead. With the world number two spot dangling like a tempting carrot, Sebastian stopped Gian from snatching it and recovered brilliantly to book his place in the final.
Mario – whose surname makes me wonder why it isn’t broken down into three tiny sections like so many other Dutch and Belgian fellas’ names – defeated Kanik, Doets, Dolan and then Veenstra to reach uncharted waters in 2026. He then dodged a bullet against Joe Hunt. No, he wasn’t actually shot at – that would probably result in a hefty DRA fine – but Joe missed a match dart before the Belgian edged through in a decider.
His semi-final produced another amusing height differential, this time against Justin Hood. That said, anyone who plays the Somerset Ace is going to tower over him. There are baby penguins taller… perhaps that’s why he likes them so much. Who knows? Anyway, Mario won that one 7-4.
Onto the final, and once again The Bolt spent much of the match behind the eight ball, often finding himself two legs adrift before levelling things up. In the end, though, to borrow one of Duzza’s favourite phrases, the Pole had enough tank in the fuel to get over the line.
A little yelp of delight followed before it was straight back to the poker-faced superstar we know for a quick post-match chat.
Oh, and before we go… huge congratulations to Scott Williams, who fired in another 9-darter this afternoon.
I say another because he only hit one two events ago.
I even made him a nice little commemorative picture afterwards and, shortly after posting it, discovered he much prefers bees to wasps. You live and learn.
