LUKE LITTLER: THE HOMECOMING KING

The north-west English town of Warrington today paid tribute to its darting king, Luke Littler, as the World Champion was on hand to officially unveil his new mural (not memorial as my mate Adam of A&A Media fame kept saying. That’s something VERY different pal!)

Now, only the Great Wall of China and an image of The Nuke are visible from space. This thing is so huge they must have commissioned Cor Dekker to paint it. Either that, or Banksy did exceptionally well to balance on a ladder while creating this masterpiece.

The morning kicked off with Luke arriving in front of the gigantic artwork and Golden Square staff desperately trying to ensure nobody was flattened by an oncoming bus. “One million quid to shut this lane off,” one red-fleeced official told me. I’m not entirely convinced that was accurate. Still, nobody died or had to be scraped off the road, which was a positive. That would have put a bit of a blemish on what was otherwise a day of celebration.

After Luke posed for photos with the Mayor (full Mr T bling, the works) and former Mayor Mo Hussain, whose stature is rather exaggerated by his successor, it was onto what I affectionately call “the big bit near the Barley Mow pub.”

Once there, PDC commentator Dan Dawson took the reins—or, in this case, the microphone—and hosted a quick Q&A with Littler. The teenager was then asked to judge a painting competition before presenting prizes to three youngsters and treating them to a game of darts on stage.

Quite frankly, I’m surprised the bloke who painted the mural didn’t win. After all, it must have taken him hours… and he had the added peril of being several storeys up.

Luke then did what Luke does best: threw a few darts before heading down to sign autographs for youngsters wearing more Nuke replica shirts than you’ll find in the Target warehouse.

The world number one then headed home with partner Faith, along with Mum and Dad, to pack for Orlando first thing in the morning.

It’s a hard life, isn’t it?
