Quite often I’ll come across a statistic and think to myself something along the lines of, “That’s fairly interesting,” or perhaps, “Yeah… I kind of already knew that.” More often than not, though, it’s the sort of information you could uncover with about three clicks on Darts Connect or a quick Google search. Nothing ground-breaking. Nothing that’s going to have Sir David Attenborough narrating over the top while dramatic music builds in the background.

So imagine my delight when I was mindlessly scrolling through X, desperately searching for inspiration for a fresh article instead of doing something productive like washing the car, mowing the lawn or pretending to understand my bank balance, when I stumbled across a little gem from Tom Nankivell (@dartingupdates).

To be fair, the username probably gave the game away. It was, in fact, an actual darts update. A proper one. Not somebody announcing they’d just hit their first 180 in the Dog & Duck despite everyone there witnessing four bounce-outs and a person being blinded.

What Tom had painstakingly put together was EVERY single non-European player ever to have appeared at the PDC World Championship.

And even though I’ve capitalised the word every, I’m going to labour the point even further because it genuinely deserves it. It was exactly that. Every single one. Not most. Not the notable ones. Not the ones Wikipedia remembered. Every. Single. One.

Now, whether Mr Nankivell has gone full Nelson Mandela mode on us, voluntarily locking himself away in a tiny room with nothing but a laptop, a Wi-Fi connection and an unhealthy obsession with tungsten while the outside world slowly forgets he exists… or whether he simply found himself spectacularly bored one Tuesday evening and thought, “I know what’ll spice my life up…” remains a mystery.

The alternative is that he’s such a colossal darts enthusiast that this is what genuinely relaxes him. Some people meditate. Some climb mountains. Some restore vintage tractors. Tom apparently compiles obscure World Championship statistics that absolutely nobody asked for… until everybody suddenly wants to read them.

He could, of course, simply have no children. Or possess the sort of incredibly understanding partner who hears the words, “I’m just going to spend six hours researching every non-European World Championship player since the early nineties,” and responds with, “Lovely dear, tea will be ready in half an hour.”

Personally, I suspect she’d have buried me beneath the patio long before I reached player number 47.

Tom looks young enough to have neither kids nor a mortgage draining every ounce of happiness from his soul. As long as that remains the case, he’ll continue having the luxury of producing little beauties like this instead of spending Saturday afternoons assembling flat-pack wardrobes while silently questioning every life decision that led him there.

So fair play, lad. Genuinely brilliant work.

I’m sure he won’t mind me shamelessly pinching it, provided I credit the source properly. I like to think I’ve done exactly that. Besides, if anyone deserves the recognition for disappearing down one of the deepest statistical rabbit holes darts has probably ever seen, it’s him. There are conspiracy theorists with less commitment.

Not only did Tom somehow unearth every non-European player ever to grace the Ally Pally stage, but he also split them into continents, tracked the years in which they appeared and even thoughtfully added a little national flag beside each name.

Admittedly, you’d probably need to be a fully paid-up vexillophile to identify a few of them without cheating, but it certainly looks prettier than sticking “JAP”, “PHI” or “RSA” in brackets and hoping for the best.
